The Culture Series não é um projeto novo, mas continua sendo muito inspirador! O trabalho é fruto de uma parceria entre a artista Afroditi Psarra e o arquiteto Dafni Papadopoulou. O objetivo do projeto era combinar artesanato eletrônico com design paramétrico e fabricação digital em uma pesquisa sobre wearables.

The Culture Series é um projeto de têxtil eletrônico (e-textile) inspirado nas obras espaciais do escritor de ficção científica britânico Iain M. Banks, que imaginava uma civilização do futuro onde seres humanos dependem de máquinas sofisticadas, num mundo onde tudo é sensível.

Este projeto de vestuário inovador foi concebido como um organismo híbrido e responsivo às funções vitais do usuário e seus batimentos cardíacos. Isso é possível através de movimentos sutis nas mangas que se comportam como uma pele que respira de dentro e para fora. As mangas da roupa foram projetadas em Rhino e Grasshopper, em seguida foram cortadas a laser em couro e montadas à mão.

O cérebro deste wearable tem um microcontrolador Arduino embutido e atuadores leves criados usando fio muscular, filme de kapton, fita de cobre e tiras de pvc (a versão atualizada usa neoprene e tecido condutor de cobre como base do atuador incorporado no interior da estrutura de couro) , Bem como um brinco em 3d impresso com um sensor de pulso embutido.

“The Culture” series is a collaboration between media artist Afroditi Psarra and architect Dafni Papadopoulou that aims to combine electronic handicrafts with parametric design and digital fabrication on an ongoing research on wearables.

“The Culture” series is an e-textiles project inspired by the Space Operas of British science fiction writer Iain M. Banks and his eclectic imagery of The Culture – a future civilization of humans that live dependent on sophisticated machines in a world where everything is sentient. The garment can be perceived as a hybrid organism, responsive to the user’s vital functions -heartbeat – through subtle movements on the sleeves that behave as an augmented animalistic skin that breaths in and out.

The garment’ s sleeves are designed in Rhino and Grasshopper and have been laser-cut on leather and then assembled by hand in complex structures. The garment’s circuit has an embedded Arduino microcontroller and lightweight actuators created using muscle wire, kapton film, copper tape and pvc strips (the updated dress version uses neoprene and copper conductive fabric as the base of the actuator incorporated in the interior of the leather structure), as well as a 3d printed earring with an embedded pulse sensor.
